First timers passing through

First of all, let me tell you that Trip Advisor has never let me down, so I am here again seeking advice. We are going to be driving from Manhattan to Boston. Have never been the the Hamptons but have heard how beautiful the drive is. I would like to stay one night at a nice reasonably priced hotel or quaint B and B. Will visit the Lighthouse while passing through. What else? We would love to drive along the beach and go to a nice restaurant for dinner. Any suggestions? We are two active seniors out to see the area's beauty. Thank you in advance for your response.

There is no beautiful drive to/from/in the Hamptons and you mostly can't drive along the beach. It's beautiful once you get there but the drive from Manhattan can be just awful with bad traffic. When you plan to do this will depend on whether you can find a 1 night stay. In season (Memorial Day to Labor Day) most places require a 2 night minimum unless you go during the week. If your plan is to take ferries up to Boston, going to Montauk which is where the lighthouse is overshoots your target by about an hour.

To visit the Hamptons (which includes the charming village of Sag Harbor where the first ferry you'd take would be), you can stay in Sag Harbor (Baron's Cove is a motel across from the water that should be reasonable). You can visit the towns of Southampton, Bridgehampton & East Hampton as well.

To get to Boston, you'd take the ferry from Sag Harbor to Shelter Island (a charming & quaint spot and another option of a place to stay overnight), drive across Shelter Island to the north side and take the ferry from there to Greenport (another cute town) and from Greenport, drive the North Fork to Orient Point and take a ferry from there to New London , Ct.

To get an idea of distances, go to

maps.google.com

and look at the distance between NYC and Sag Harbor. Then look at Montauk which is where the lighthouse is. For ideas on a nice dinner, first decide where you'd like to stay. There's a very sweet inn in Bridgehampton called 24 Lumber Lane which will be more charming than Baron's Cove.

Pierre's restaurant in Bridgehampton is walkable from there and very good (although can get pricey). One Ocean is another restaurant right there which will have new owners this year (not yet open).
