October vaction in New England area 4 days 10/10-10/13

We live in NYC and are planning a 4 day car excursion to the New England Area. We are foodies so we would like to be near some good areas to eat but we also would like to see some fall foliage as well as some quaint towns with some shopping. We are 2 couples not adverse to walking around. Where is the best place to stay and maximize what we are trying to see. Looking for lodging recommendation's as well as places to see and eat.

Well, I guess I replied to your post that did not specify the dates. Your dates are prime Leaf Peeping time in the White Mountains. There will also be good foliage in the Lake Winnipesaukee area, which is not far from the Whites. COlor will be starting to come on strong farther south but probalby not the display like up north for another week +/-. Not surprisingly, this is a very congested tome to be up north, but still easy than the LIE on a good day. A lot of lodging books up months in advance, so if this is where you want to head, make your reservations as soon as possible. Staying an hour south of Lincoln/Woodstock or COnway is not so bad. Everything is still very close, and much of what you are looking for is not dependent on the fall foliage.

Jackson, NH has two of the best restaurants in the Mountains. also North Conway, Bartlett, Woodstock, Meredith, or Holderness. Google these town and you will see what they have to offer but the first three are all within 20 minutes of each other so no big decicision. Meredith and Holderness are on the water in the Lakes region. All of the towns are cute and have shopping, hiking sightseeing and good dining.
