Appropriate footwear

Hi there everyone

Likely to be the silliest question you will have seen all day but...

Having never seen snow before I really don't know whether my nike sneakers will cut it on the hikes from the Hermitage in this July weather.

Are hiking or snow shoes absolutely necessary?

Also, anyone know if I can find shoes for huge feet in Christchurch or Mt Cook? (ladies size 10 :)

thank you!

Hi JD, not at all a silly question :)

You will definitely need waterproof hiking boots or walking shoes for walking the trails in July. Sneakers just won't give you the traction you need.

And there is a fabulous shoe shop in Chch for larger sizes, though they won't have hiking boots (just buy mens boots) http://www.willowshoes.co.nz/

happy travels :)

Despite the fact that they are well formed tracks in this area, some form of ankle support is recomended to prevent soft tissue injuries. You could be distracted by a Kea or a view and stumble etc. You dont need anything "top of the line" or specialised but I would also makesure they are waterproof.
