Wanting a view of Tasman Lake and Glacier without paying $$$

I'm not being tight, but as we are away for 6 weeks, we need to watch the budget. On another thread, someone advised it is possible to walk to a viewpoint. Where would this be from? Will be there in September.

Thanks for any information.

There is a well signposted carpark, with a cute little picnic shelter and a toilet on the Tasman Road. This is as far as you can take a rental car. From the car park you can take two tracks - one leads steeply straight up onto the lateral morraine (side wall) of the glacier so you look down on the Lake. The right fork (again well-signposted) follows a much more gentle path to the Lake shore & jetty. This takes about 30 minutes. If there are icebergs at this end of the lake you can see them easily.

Starting from the Hermitage Hotel at Aoraki you drive a few kms on a gravel road then walk over to the terminal lake lookout. The road and track are well signposted. There is a toilet and shelter at the carpark.

The track divides - take the left branch uphill for amazing views down over the lake and glacier. Take the left branch for a walk to the lake edge where the boats leave for the cruise amongst the icebergs.

Those walks mentioned by wanakalakes are free and if you are on a budget the $140 that glacierexplorers charge for the same walk and boat ride would be better spent elsewhere.

Oh wow!

This is some great info folks! The walks mentioned above are the exact same route taken by the Glacier explorer's team?? We were just going to book @ $140 each for 3 of us...

The left branch uphill - is it safe and recommended to do with a 6-year old? Or should we just take the gentler right branch down to the lake?

Thanks!

The path is reasonably well-formed but steep for a very short distance. You have to climb the glacial moraine wall. Worth doing both if you have the time. Of course you will get much closer to the icebergs on the boat but I was satisfied just to see them from the shore.
