Traveling to Arthur Pass by Public Transport

We would like to travel from Christchurch to Arthur Pass by a Bus/Coach. Would request for help on the following

- Are there any coaches covering thier round trip in a day, we do not want to stay overnight

- We are not hikers, but like to walk (round trip of max. two hours) on a scenic trail, so what time should we leave from Christchurch

- Can we book our return trip in advance

- which are the agencies proving coach services.

Thanks for your replies.

You may be best to take the Tranz Alpine scenic rail service from Christchurch (leaves 8:15am) to get to Arthurs Pass. Spend about 5 hours in the area before catching the return service from Greymouth mid afternoon for Christchurch - http://www.kiwirailscenic.co.nz/tranzalpine/.

I would also recommend the Trans Alpine train. It's not the cheapest option, but it's a great experience. There are a couple of bus and shuttle services over the Pass, so you could go one way with one company and back with another to match your timetable.

If you walk the Bridle Veil Falls Track and the Punch Bowl Falls Track, that's about 2 hours easy walking and they both start at the same place. You can decide if you want to do one or both.

Cheers

The Punch Bowl walk is a real cracker. You don't have to be a professional hiker, but it will test your fitness as there are lots of steps. We did it in belting rain. There were Kea all over the place. It was fantastic.

Coaster should have the bus details.

You could use Atomic Shuttles, they will pick you up in Christchurch and have you in Arthur's Pass by 9.30 am then pick you up on their return to Christchurch. Buses will tend to try a little harder to find you if you are delayed which is the same for trains. the total return price is $70.00. you cant even get there for that price on the Trans Alpine.
