Driving through Arthur's Pass

My parents and I are planning to drive from Christchurch to Greymouth via Arthur's Pass in mid-November after completing North Island. We were told that the drive along the Pass is breathtaking. What is the general road condition be like at this time of the year? None of us has any experience driving on icy road or using tyre chain. Would it be more advisable to change route to Picton -> Nelson -> Greymouth instead?

Thanks in advance.

The Road up the waimac valley is the old main road. It's called "Old West coast Road" It's in excellent condition and has less traffic.

Last weekend we drove 4x4 up the banks of the waimac from West melton to near Darfield. Now that was a bit more challenging but the views were staggering. You would require about 20 people and a couple of lengths of rope. You might void your rental agreement.
