getting to Lake Chapala (Ajijic)

Has anyone taken bus or rented car and gone to Ajijic for a few days? Thinking of visiting the area leaving from Bucerias and spending a couple days just to see it. Nor sure best way to get there?

coming from Bucerias going through Ixtapa would the best thing to do would be to turn right east of Ameca, follow towards San Martín de Hidalgo and turn left on hwy 80 just before El Crucero de Santa María. Follow Hwy 80 to Acatlán de Juárez, stay in the left lane (hwy 54) to bypass Acatlán de Juárez. Follow 54 till you get to hwy 15 (heading south) and as you get close to Jocotepec take the right fork to Chapala, head towards Jaltepec and on towards Ajijic.

Yes, Compostella is between Bucerias and GDL......

Besides skyseulb's confusing directions, that route would take twice the time as the safe toll road direct route.

Fly (40 minutes/$50 USD Viva Aerobus). Rent a car after you get to Ajijic. I live in both places and the drive is not fun.

How do you usually get from GDL airport to Ajijic? Cab? Bus? Rental car?

At the Guadalajara airport you can pay for a taxi at the taxi stand - $420 pesos. There is Uber also that picks up at the Oxxo. Or you can rent a car, but once you get to Ajijic you can walk or bus to anything local - much easier than driving - not great roads, lots of topes and traffic.
