A week in Wairarapa

Hello. We are a couple planning to spend a week in the Wairarapa. We like the outdoors and wildlife as well as mooching around town and getting to know the history of the area. We are fairly fast paced and like a lot of things to see and do. Having said that we can spend hours on the beach if there is wildlife around as my partner is a keen photographer.

I am having trouble deciding where to base ourselves. We don't mind one, two or three different bases. Driving is not a problem.

Is a week a bit to long in this region do you think? Is there enough for us to see and do? We are not keen on winery visiting.

Thanks for any help.

Martinborough and Greytown are the prettiest towns to be based. Whangaimoana is a lovely old home that does B&B and it's a good place to be based for the southern Wairarapa. wairarapanz.com/whangaimoana-garden-retreat-… If you'll be there in spring they have a huge field of daffodils blooming in front of the house. I would stay at Martinborough or Whangaimoana for say three nights and the rest of the time in Greytown.

Non-wine activities include:

Drive to Cape Palliser (Ngawi fishing village, seal colony, lighthouse. There are also interesting archaeological sites down this way if you know where to look. Plus the Pinnacles walk is very interesting, lots of fossils, LOTR location: …govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/… You can squeeze all this into a day if you're coming from Martinborough, but a keen photographer might like to go back for a second day as there are good photo opportunities around here.)

Mt Bruce bird sanctuary http://www.pukaha.org.nz/

Strolling around Greytown: must-sees include Schoc Chocolate, and there are decent antique shops, art/craft shops, nice restaurants

Castlepoint (nice drive, beach, lighthouse, good photo ops) http://www.castlepoint.co.nz/

Waiohine Gorge …govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/…

You can also go hot air ballooning from Carterton. We went gliding at the Jury Hill Gliding Club - they take people up tandem on good days and it's quite affordable because they have a winch launch. http://www.glidingwairarapa.co.nz/

I have friends who did the Tora walk and enjoyed it very much: tourism.net.nz/holiday/…
