U s dollars

Looking for advice regarding should we get dollars in uk or bring pounds sterling and exchange to us and eastern Carribean dollars in hotel. I assume you can change money in hotel ?

Do you have to bring adaptor for the sockets or do ours in uk plug straight into sockets at the hotel ?

Any more tips would be useful as it's 12 years since we last visited st Lucia.

Many thanks

Hi,

Bring sterling and change into EC$ at a bank in St Lucia. That will get you the best rate. There are also ATMs that issue EC$. There is a bank at the airport if you want to change some on arrival or if you are staying somewhere remote from a bank.

Hotels will change money but at a horrible rate especially for sterling.

Re Plugs many hotels have both US and UK type sockets. Where are you staying? Then I / trip advisor colleagues will be able to advise further

Hi,

I have never been to Coconut Bay but I understand it is very close to Vieux Fort town so finding a bank should not be a problem. Also that means I can't help about the sockets but I am sure somebody else will post an answer to this.

Have a great trip

The bank of St Lucia is at the airport; a 5 minute walk from the hotel. The other two banks, the First Caribbean International Bank and the Scotia Bank are a five minute taxi drive away next to the Vieux Fort shopping mall. The latter two banks are Canadian although the First Caribbean used to be owned by Barkleys and Barkleys bank cards may still be accepted. One can find out from a Barkleys branch in the UK.

From the Coconut Bay website -

"The voltage of all electrical outlets at the resort is 220/50hz, so guests will need a converter. A british 3-pin plug (which are available for sale at any electronics store pre-travel) will suffice."

As for banks - there is the one at the airport like stated above and actually 3 banks in Vieux Fort town - ScotiaBank, First Caribbean Bank and Bank of St. Lucia. All three have ATMs - if you card has the Plus symbol or the Cirrus or is a Visa/MC ATM/Debit card, it should work just fine - however, make sureyou notify your bank that you will be overseas. My aunt uses her Barblay's card at Scotia, but unless she tells them she is in St. Lucia, they lock out her card.

Definitely change your sterling here on the island - and definitely not at the hotel. You will get the best rates at the bank by far!

Enjoy your trip!!!

if you are going to use your atm card abroad;

inform your bank when and where you are going. even if you do this, the bank's security computer programme may still automatically block your card.

take a photocopy of front and back of all cards [credit and debit]. keep copy separate from your cards. this will help you report if your card is lost or stolen.

if your card is automatically blocked, you will find a 24hour help-line number on your card. phone to get it unblocked. you will need to answer security questions, so know when you opened the account, what direct-debits you have, what the overdraft limit is, as well as personal facts. having told them previously of your trip will speed up the process.

most banks have a cheaper number to ring from overseas; ask your bank for theirs before you go.

hope this helps.

The EC Dollar is set at a fixed rate of $1US - $2.70EC. you will not get that exchange rate anywhere on the island however, banks and such all make a small commission of your exchange. The Bank rate is $1US-$2.67EC. That is what you will get form the banks, ATM's and some tour companies. the street exchange is $1US-$2.50EC

ps: if you are staying in the Rodney Bay area, you actually do get the full $2.70 exchange rate at the casino - no commission fees. Just a note.
