Hotel choice?

I am 40 and will be bringing my 16 year old with me. I have narrowed it down to Isla Verde beach area. I want the hotel to be right on the beach so we can do late night early morning walks on the beach. I also want to be near cheap chain food type places as my teen is a very picky eater and I don't want him starving on vacation. I looked at Intercontinetal and El San Juan because they are close to Walgreens and strip mall. We don't want a party scene though, nor a dressy atmosphere. We want to just be on the beach, wear shorts and relax. For this I looked on down the beach to the Beach House and Water Club. I don't know about the walkability of this area, how far between things or night walking. We would also like a pool that is open late if possible. This infromation doesn't seem to be on the websites.

Any advice from someone with more knowledge would be helpful. We plan on going to OSJ and doing a rain forest trip. My son would also like to try parasailing or surfing. We would also like to go to Plaza Las America.

Isla Verde is a great area and walkable. The dry sand is soft of course. Down by the water it is good and and hard. You will see people running along the beach. Isla Verde ave has sidewalks. Lots of fast food places. I like to hit KFC when we check in.

Hi Ictaj, I think the Intercontinental is what you are looking for.

If you're looking for a more casual alternative to the Inter and El San Juan, you might want to look at the Courtyard By Marriott. It is at the end of the same strip as the other 2. It has a very nice beach, pool, casino, and several restaurants in house. It is also very casual and does not have the party scene of the other 2.

The El San Juan is THE party scene in San Juan.

When reading reviews I read that the Courtyard was too far from fast food and other shopping, that it was a little more remote. Would we still be able to walk to these places easily, even at night? Is there a bus stop close? These are also priorities.

Be aware of 16%-20% hidden resort fees@ all of these places

1. Ritz Carlton

2. Intercontinental

3. Courtyard - too far to walk to other hotels.

Only shopping in area is at Ritz and El San Juan.

Best value and location - Hampton Inn & Suites - no resort fee. One block from beach & located between Ritz and El San Juan- two minute walk to either. #1 on Trip Advisor.

No to Beach house-dump and Water Club - Poor attempt @South Beach hotel.

I brought my family 2 years ago for a week while working in PR (ages 12 and 19 at the time). We stayed at a number of places (El Convento, Ponce Hilton, and the Hilton Caribe). All were great, but the kids appreciated the Hilton Caribe the most. Lots to do. Big swimming pool. Right on the beach - most hotels have beach access but the Hilton Caribe had the beach incorporated into their property - there is no public access. Great big trampoline and mountain in the ocean water. Lots of daily, supervised kids activities. About a 2 mile walk to Old San Juan. About a 2 mile walk to Condado - Ashford Ave with a number of good restaurants.

On site restaurants are pricy. Ala Carte Steak house has a $102 Porterhouse. The Pan-Asian restaurant was good but pricy also. Starbucks at the hotel at Starbuck prices was a perfect bit of home.
