sterling to euros

Hi - three more weeks to go - going on 4th July for 2 weeks.

Staying in marinos apts Lassi - are there places where we can change sterling into euros - we had no problems in Crete last year and assume it will be the same in Lassi.

Also are mossies a problem in July

Many thanks

Hi there

Plenty of places in Lassi to change money, exchange bureaux, some shops, some hire places and so on. They will all make a charge for this I would imagine, maybe 2-3% of the value of the transaction.

Hi Yaja,

Don't forget to post a review of the Marinos Apartments when you get back as I go in 9 weeks time and would be interested to know what it's like.

Happy Holidays !

You will almost certainly get a better rate by taking a debit card and getting money out of ATMs. It would be an unusual exchange bureau that could make a profit charging only 3%.

Admittedly, we haven't take Sterling or TCs with us now for several years but most places charged between 2 and 3% for changing cash in our experience.

I see where the difference is here. Yes, 2 or 3% is usually the charge, as well as the already lower cash rate, so the overall difference between that & ATM is much greater, from 5% (if you are really lucky) upwards. 8% is more realistic.

>>All the change bureaux in Lassi charge 2%<<

Yes, but they also have an exchange rate that is worse than the inter-bank rate, so the effective charge is usually 6% or more.

Careful with the debit cards. Some are better than others. One money advice site lists cards from hell and it includes some big banks. Charges can be -

"Spending penalty: £1.25. Exchange load: 2.75%. Cash Withdrawal fee: 2% min £2 max £5."

There is much to be said for taking Euro travellers' cheques. Every place on the main Lassi strip charges 2%. So I go with a 100euro cheque and I get 98 euros broken up into big notes, small notes and some change - very handy for taxi!

See you in the Marinos next week! Excellent choice of accommodation!

There's only 1 ATM in Lassi which is next to one of the Car Hire places (CBR). It doesnt belong to them and is frequently Out of order ! All axchanges charge 2%, CBR being one of the better rates.
