Stalis with children - suitable trips

We are taking our children 12 and 8 ( boys) to stails next May for two weeks, we are an active family so won't be sat around the pool or beach everyday. I'm looking for places to visit ( I love getting off the normal tourist route and seeing the real area) , cultural, nature and sport for two very active boys, would my 8 year old be able to do the Samariá Gorge he managed Snowdiona aged 6 which is a total of 14 km up and down and you climb 1000 metres up in hight. Thanks

Hi,

Would horseriding interest yourselves and the kids, there is an excellent horseriding stables nearby that gives you the oppurtunity to ride along the beach or venture up into the hills above Heraklion on an evening trip, ideal for beginners or experienced riders and a really memorable experience.

Have a look at the website if your interested it's Hersonissos horse riding.

The fella who runs it is a local called Gregory,an absolute gentleman with a great sense of humour who will help you out if you have any questions about anything.

Re Samaria, it's over 200km from Stalis to the start of the walk. I'm sure that there will be tours including transfers to and from Stalis, but they will probably leave at 5 a.m. if not before, and get back about 9 p.m. So, your call naturally, in terms of stamina etc if they can climb Snowdon they can walk Samaria, but it's a very long day.

Stalis is on the main bus route to and from Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. So, plenty of places to go to including:

Heraklion town, Knossos, Cretaquarium (bus stop 9), Hersonissos town and harbour, Aquaworld in Hersonissos (bus stop 20), ancient Malia, Neapolis, Agios Nikolaos, and then from Ag. Nik you can easily get to Elounda, and the former leper colony island of Spinalonga etc etc.

If you need any more info on specific attractions just ask.

Hi Susan

Stalis and the surrounding area has plenty enough to keep you and your boys happy and entertained for the duration of your holiday, particularly as you are prepared to get out and about in addition to spending time in resort.

As well as the very good recommendations above, Stalis has a good selection of watersports available along its lovely long sandy beach. Also Star Beach waterpark is only a 5 min bus ride away with a bus stop right outside.

A trip up to the Lassithi Plateau up in the mountains behind Stalis is something I would highly recommend for a day out. Best reached by hiring a car and accessing via the mountain villages of Mohos and Krassi. These two villages are worth stopping off at and exploring on the way up. Also, just before you get onto the plateau is the Homo Sapiens Museum, a fascinating place which your boys will love. Lassithi Plateau itself is a wonderful natural mountain plateau with several traditional old greek villages dotted along its circumference road.

Steve has already mentioned Spinalonga which is also highly recommended. You can get over to the island by boat from either Agios Nikolaos, Elounda or the village Plaka. I'd recommend the latter as Plaka is a traditional village worth visiting, with some lovely tavernas waterside that look back over to Spinalonga.

Have a great holiday.

I agree that your boys would like it at Star Beach. We visit Aquaworld in Hersonissos annually. It is a small rescue centre that offers plenty of hands on experiences. If your boys are into handling snakes and reptiles this is a must visit. It is at the far end of the main road through Hersonissos (from Stallis). The visit takes no more than 1-2 hours so you could combine it with one to Star Beach. Both can be done by public transport from Stallis.
