Stalis Next Year

Me and my girlfriend are thinking of booking up for Stalis around July/August next year. We want a chilled holiday which is why we opted not to go to the centre Malia, but at the same time wanted to be within easy reach of the lively nightlife!

We know we will be within easy reach of Malia and I daresay we'll venture in on a few occasions. But is there a decent enough nightlife in Stalis itself? Does it have its own strip? We'd like somewhere with a good choice of nice restaurants and bars.

Also, what kind of budget should we be looking to bring for 2 weeks self catering per person? Are prices in the restaurants and bars reasonable?

Finally, we have been looking at staying at the Dionysos appartments. It seems to be nice enough and the reviews are generally good. Has anybody on the forum been there that could tell us what it's like?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there

Stalis makes an ideal base, situated as it is between the two party resorts on the island. Stalis has plenty going on, shops, bars, tavernas and restaurants but nothing OTT like Malia and Hersonissos.

Prices for drinking and dining out haven't increased at all this year - everyone's fighting for every tourist Euro they can lay hands on, so competition is keeping prices down. Some places now offer fixed price menus, maybe €10-12 per person for two courses, house wine, and a coffee at the end, or possibly a free dessert. Some might be cheaper, others dearer, like anywhere, you can spend as much or as little as you wish.

Avoid anywhere that doesn't display menus/tariffs outside and definitely avoid anywhere that employs touts to herd you inside to sit down - if the food was any good, they's all be looking for a job.

Same for bars - most show prices outside and if you look for happy hours, promos and BOGOFs, you can drink quuite reasonably, with a large beer (500ml) usually for around €2,50.

Dionysos Apartments are really nice place to stay stayed there many times. Rainbow are lovely as well and if you want be on main strip and bit closer to Malia try Sergiani apartments this place also has great food at there taverna.

Hi Darren

It sounds like Stalis would suit you as it is plenty lively enough with a good choice of bars, restaurants & tavernas. At the same time it enjoys a relaxed laid back atmosphere which is more suited to families & couples than its neighbours of Malia & Hersonissos.

Stalis does not have its own strip in the same way as Malia, but it's equivalent is the lively beach road running parallel with the beach where there is a great atmosphere and where most of the bars & restaurants are situated. Stalis also has a lovely long sandy beach lined at the back by bars & tavernas.

The Dionysos Apartments are situated on the outskirts of Stalis in the Hersonissos direction about 10 mins walk from the start of the main beach road and resort centre area. Have not stayed there so cannot comment personally but the reviews of people who have stayed there appear, by and large, to be ok. They are located at the far end of Stalis in relation to Malia.

Hope this helps.

Hi Darren,

We just got back from Stallis yesterday, I think it will be just the right place for your holiday as the other posts have said. The bars and restaurants that are on the beach offer free sunbeds and umbrella if you buy drinks and stuff from them. We were told that due to the financial crisis in Greece their VAT is increasing dramatically from the 1st September 2011 (something like up to 23%) which will obviously have an impact, we are returning next year also so this will have to be something to think about when budgeting. At the moment a two course meal with drinks was between 15 & 25 euro obviously depending on what you have, but there are also quite few take away places as well.

Hope this helps, have fun x

Thanks for the replies, it sounds like the ideal destination for us.

The VAT increase is a slight concern, not enough to put us off booking though. We plan on taking around £1000 each spending money, will this be enough taking this into consideration?

Thanks

Darren

We have just come back from Stalis being a family of 3 adults and two children - we stayed at Amazones Villas Apartments which was wonderful - but I think that for something more central or within a few minutes walking distance to the centre I would recommend Filia Hotel Apartments - these are very reasonable and have a website where you can book direct with them and it includes transfers, air conditioning and safety deposit boxes which all tend to be extras if you stay anywhere else - www.filiahotel.com. We ate out for lunch and dinner every day and I thought the food was exceptional value, we had starters, mains and a couple of desserts, beers, wine and a couple of spirit and as a rule we paid on average approx 60 Euros which I think was fantastic could not get a meal like that in the UK - our cheapest was 45 Euros at Maistrali (we really thought they must have made a mistake) and the most expensive was at Ellas Taverna which was 90 Euros - it was our first visit to Stalis and certainly not our last

Thanks all for the input, we booked up last week and go there at the end of July next year!

Kirky12, we booked Dionysos through Thomas Cook, but we never got a choice between 1 and 2? Here's hoping we get Dionysos 1, I'll contact Thomas Cook and enquire.

The travel agent we went thru ensured we got 1 as that is wot we requested but it does get booked up very early due to the fact that's where the pool is but there wasn't any fighting over the loungers that was there even if ppl are staying in 2. Just ask them see wot they say no harm in asking
