Road to Santa Elena (Monte Verde area)

To go to Santa Elena, we took the road from Tilaran (north) and it was pretty bumpy. There was no need for 4WD or high clearance, but the road was dry (it may make a difference if/when the roads are soaked wet). The road was about 35 km of bumpy dirty road.

When we left the Monte Verde area, we took the road south, going to Sardinal, and it was much better. It was still a dirt road but it was much less bumpy and much shorter (~15 km).

If you are considering going to Santa Elena/Monte Verde, you may want to use the road from Sardinal.

Or take a bus or local driver. We took the van to ferry to van from Arenal to Monteverde . Looking at the rocky bumpy dirt road into Santa Elena we were very glad we did not drive on this trip,

I would like to avoid driving and want to take public transportation when possible. This van-->ferry-->van sounds good! Then, when you were in the Monteverde/Santa Elena area, were you able to get around to go to the Cloud Forest and other sites? What do you recommend? Thanks!

You will need to use taxi service to get around in Monteverde area. Organised tours will pick you from bigger hotels, and from their offices, but there is (was?) no regular bus routes that would connect different attractions.
