I see mixed reviews for Barcelo Playa Tambor -- and can't quite seem to make a decision about the place. Am considering a vacation with family members including a 9-year old. However, this would be my first experience at an 'all-inclusive' and I am somewhat anxious about the quality of food and wine (is there opportunity to upgrade brands?) Are all rooms air conditioned? Is the casino full service (slots, roulette, etc.)

I'm not crazy about small aircraft - does anything large fly from San Jose? How bad is the land trip to Playa Tambor? Or is it interesting?

If anyone can give me some additional insight it would appreciated.

Hi Travelanana, Not sure if I`m late with some insight. Anyway, Your 9 year old will love this place. Great pool, Nice beach, cool eco-walk on the east side of the property. We saw monkeys, a croc on the bank of a pond and lots of lizards. The food is ok, Usually can find something you like from the buffet. If dont like there are restaurants in the area. All rooms have aircon. I think the casino is full service, Only glanced at it through the window. Sorry, No big planes to Tambor. We drove around the penninsula to get there. Took about five hours from San Jose airport. It was a great way to see the country. Very nice scenery. Most roads are fine, except for the dirt road between Naranjo and Paquera. The Tortuga Island tour would be nice. We planned to go but it rained the day we chose to go. Hope this helps.

Hey ecite! What else can you tell me about the area? We are staying at Los Delfines (nearby Barcelo). Did you ever go into town? What about Montezuma?

We also are planning on going to Los Delfines in February and any insights on the place would be helpful. How did you book the flight to Tambor?

I have taken the land trip.. I landed in Sanjose where I stayed at a local hotel. I can't remeber the name, but it was the hotel where the bus left from to go to playa tambor. We left about 830am and stoped once for breakfast(bathroom break) the second stop was at puntarenas where the whole bus is put on a ship along with other cars....You have to get off the bus and walk on. The ship is air conditioned and they sell food nothing fancy. When you arive you walk of the ship and reboard the bus once they take it off the ship. Once you get back on the bus the ride is about 30mins to playa tambor. All the rooms are air conditioned. The casino is very small not any bigger the 20x30 feet...Very small.YEs they do have less than 20 slots and 1 maybe two roulette tables...There are a couple of pay resterants that arent a part of the all inclusive where you can order from a menu. As far as the all inclusive dinning area. It is not air conditioned and depending on when you travel there it can be quite warm in the evening. I was there in Feb...great weather but not the prime time to go. Ps the land trip is very scenic. And the bus is airconditioned and comfortable. The beach is rocky but nice. Most activities are extra $. The food is ok but all buffet style. We arived in the afternoon about 3-4pm so it takes a while to get there. You meet lots of nice people on the ship and on the bus. Almost everyone speaks english.

We booked our flight on Sansa. Did it online. It's just a thirty minute flight, so we decided to do that instead of the 5 hour land/boat trip. Would be interested in Delfines info as well....

Yes the fly from San Jose to tambor. Usually two flights in the morning, maybe more in the high season. Just look up the fights on the net, I believe its Sansa.com

Los Delfines is about 3 min. from the airport.

Oh, the flight is great, 25 min. and beautiful scenery.

Yes, it's a small plane but they are good pilots.

It would take you anywhere from 4-5 hours to travel by car and ferry.

You might want to fly in and take the bus back if you have a later flight and have to kill time.

It's flysansa.com....they def. have flights on the afternoon (about 4:30) in high season. We'll be going at the end of Fed. I've seen pictures of Rhonda's condo and it looks incredible.
