First Timers

Hi

Partner and I are hoping to fly out to Sri lanka on Dec 25th arriving 26th for two weeks. Been thinking that for our first trip unawatuna would be a good base, as we would like to see Galle and Mirissa. As it is xmas any tips for a place to stay don't mind beach or inland within walking distance. We have been to Goa many times and just wondering if costs for food etc are similar.

Also what currency is the best to take,

As you are coming from UK, GBP will be best for you.

Costs for food and e.g. transport are 20-30% above India, but some other things are cheaper than there. Hikkaduwa is closest to Goa in terms of beach shacks etc. but U'tuna is not that far behind. Most accomodation is inland but walking distance from the bay.

All the best,

Hi

Thank you for your reply. We are in our late 40ies so like a bit of life but maybe a little old for the backpacker scene, which resorts would you suggest. We also like to swim.

Well U'tuna does not have that many hotels with pool, due to space restrictions. UBR, Flower Garden, Neptune Bay, Thambapanni and recently also Thaproban are about the ones I can think off - in the outer regions like Thalpe and the far west side (but still bayside, not Jungle Beach side) there are a few more. But all other accomodation is close enough to the bay to swim there. Of the list above, only UBR and Thaproban are on the bay/beach.

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

That's on the quite low end of the scale, for less than 50 quid/night during peak season it'll be a challenge to get a place with a pool at all. But feel free to check the names suggested above...

That's about 35 quid per night/60 USD. Definitely no resorts for that price during Christmas time. But you might have some luck with the smaller hotels and guest houses. Book ahead!
