Francavilla di Sicilia in October 2011

Hi dear Vagabondo,

decided to write to you as I still remember how much you helped us when we went to Erice in Dec 2009. It wouldn't have been such a fantastic holiday without your help.

This coming October, we will be going to Francavilla for 6 days, we have already booked the hotel and a car. My parents who are in their early 70's will be travelling with us, can you kindly recommend nice places that we can visit? Many thanks for your help,

Christine Tabone Forte

Ciao dear TaboneForte – Welcome back! :-)

Francavilla di Sicilia is a very local town near the Gole Alcantara.

The village of Linguaglossa is the gateway for excursions on the north side of Etna - From Linguaglossa you would access Piano Provenzana and Etna Nord.

There are wonderful Etna wineries to visit in this area.

Mount Etna: A flavour of Sicily:

winery tours:

You might also enjoy the views of Etna from Etna’s Circumetnea railway (on a good weather day) – The section from Giarre to Bronte is the most scenic.

Mediaeval Randazzo is worth a visit, especially on Sundays for its market.

Hotel, B& B, etc near Bronte?:

From Randazzo, you might drive to Maniace and Bronte’s Nelson Castle.

If you appreciate stunning views, you could drive the Nebrodi highlands from Florestra to Ucria and down to Sinagra.

You might also enjoy an excursion to Tindari.

And of course, there are the more typical destinations - Taormina, Castelmola, Savoca, Catania....

Kind regards,

Hi dear Vagabonda,

sorry, it is me again. Can you kindly tell us whether there are any clothes and shoe markets near Francavilla ( even 1 hour away by car)? We arrive in Sicily on a Monday and come back to Malta on Saturday, so it is not possible on the said days or Sunday.

And with regards to pizzerias and restaurants, can you recommend some good places pls?

Many thanks once again,

regards,

Christine

Hi dear Christine,

Pity Randazzo’s market is on Sunday, but Taormina’s market is held on Wednesdays.

Catania (P.zza Carlo Alberto) is the best for markets in the area, and only an hour’s drive, but park at the airport and take the bus to the city.

Francavilla di Sicilia is very local, but you might enjoy Trattoria da Angelo in Sinagra, or Ristorante Veneziano or Parco Statella in Randazzo.

Always a pleasure Christine!

You might also enjoy lunch and tasting at Murgo Tenuta San Michele in Santa Venerina or Azienda Agrituristica Liperus in Piedimonte Etneo.

Because you’ll explore by day, you could consider lunch your main meal of the day and then stay nearer Francavilla di Sicilia at night.

La Vela is also typical and authentic in Giardini Naxos.
