Koh Samet or Rayong?

Looking to spend 5 nights, Mon-Sat ,last week in September, eat Thai food, read a book, have a few beers but not party all night.

Samed looks good but is there a chance the ferries will be cancelled due to adverse weather? Would be my first choice as it seems more laid back and Thai.

Prefer small hotels but Novotel in Rayong is offering very good deal with Bht500 towards F&B per day, which would pay for a few beers, although want to eat out local. Several reviewers have said there are small beach bars/eateries within walking distance.

On my own but quite happy with that!

I haven't stayed in Rayong town but not much different from other Thai seaside towns.

I went there a couple Septembers ago and had no trouble with the Ferry. Aim to get there before noon to catch the ferry.

Much better off staying in Koh Samed, decent acommodations and great seafood. White Sand beach is close to the 7/11 and has the majority of restaurants. Other beaches - Vong Duan is quieter. Koh Samed is the idea place to relax on the beach, read a book and chill out.

Definitely Koh Samet! It's relaxing during the day and exciting at night... the Silver Sand Beach resort at Ao Phai is where the central 'night life' is located. Ao Pudsa and Ao Tubtim which is about 5 mins walk away along the beach are perfect if you want to get both tranquility and the excitement... book early though as the resorts there are filling up fast (especially those facing the ocean). Ao Wongduan is further down but relatively quieter usually occupied with families...

have to disagree with post 2 - there is no need to book ahead if you're arriving on a Monday.

Don't book anything on Koh Samet in advance in September unless you're arriving on a weekend. When you get off the boat on a Monday, you'll have your choice of rooms and you can easily bargain for a lower price.

Check out Seahorse Bungalows in Vong Duean. Nice and clean, quiet, steps from the beach, attractively furnished, and you should be able to get a motel-style bungalow for about 1000 baht a night. AFAIK you can't book this in advance.
