or must travel 80 km to akaroa? got 1 day in lyttelton on cruiseship. any where near lyttelton can do kayaking? thanks

Lyttelton has great kayaking.

Head for Magazine Bay, that's where most stuff happens; aim for the Naval Point Club: navalpoint.co.nz/about-us/npcl-map.gif/view

You need to get out towards the headlands for dolphins, but it's probably the best place to see Hectors in NZ.

Yes Lyttelton is great for kayaking but I don't know of anywhere in the harbour that you can actually rent a kayak. The Blackcat company used to run wildlife cruises in the harbour but from their website it doesn't look like this is available anymore. http://www.blackcat.co.nz/cruises.html.

If you definitely want to see dolphins I'd head to Akaroa, it takes about an hour to get there.
