Sipaden Diving - help needed

Hi there

My first ever post on Trip advisor, so bear with me!

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Malaysia Borneo for two reasons. 1) For jungle trekking and Orangutan observation and 2) for Scuba diving on the Sipaden and Mabul islands.

I have contacted several scuba centres (Uncle Chang, Scuba Junkie) and then have come back to me with quotes regarding transfers, accomodation, and diving. At £460 for 3 nights, and two days of diving (1x Sipaden, 1x Mabul) it seems expensive.

My question is whether it is best to book in advance at these above prices, negotiating them down, or whether we should just turn up and then find the best value dive centre on the day.

I have read several times about the 'diving permits' and am concerned that there may not be availability?

Did anyone just turn up and get a better deal, negotiated backpacker style?

Thanks

Paul

Yes, do book in advance. The price seem expensive, do look around a bit more, havent been there for ages so cant tell you exactly how much. Also checkout borneo divers too.

Dear Paul,

460 pound is for 1 person or 2 person? If it is for 2 person then is quite the normal price... Yes, you should book in advance, so that the chances for you to get the permit for diving in Sipadan area is bigger because the government only allowed 120 person to go into the sipadan area per day. If you can't get the permit, you still can dive around Mabul and Kapalai. If you need further inquiries, you can contact me maxchan1982@hotmail.com

Cheers

Book ahead to ensure you get to Sipadan. You need to be an Advanced Diver to go. Try Sipadan Scuba as they do packages including trips to Sipadan. On line booking is available. I have been with them before and would recommend them. You have to be based in Semporna itself and the daily travel time can be a bit of a bind but accommodation in Semporna is good and cheap. On Mabul it can be good and expensive or cheap and rubbish. You may also consider Seaventures Dive Rig.
