Any good Ruins near Stann Cree/Hopkins?

We are staying at Almond Beach in Hopkins this Aoril. The ruins tour offered by the resort will take us to the Xunantunich ruins. BUT, it's a 3 hour bus ride there and back.

I have heard that there are ruins all over Belise, with some of the best being in the south east in and around Stann Creek. Can anyone make any suggestions on a location or tour comapny that may service the area?

Ask if they offer tours to the sites in the Toledo district. Close to hopkins is the restored sugar mill and mayflower site

I visited the Lubaantún Maya site near Punta Gorda last August; it would be a bit closer than Xunantunich but is not as impressive a site imo. Santiago, the caretaker, makes it a memorable visit, though - ask him to show you some recent finds if you get the chance.

My photos with blog and travelogue links on the main page of each collection are below in case you're interested - Lubaantún photos are in the 2012 collection and Xunantunich is in the 2003 collection. Happy trails!

As Hopefulist said, Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit are in the south, an easy drive from Hopkins, but they do not compare with Xunantunich, or Caracol. Also there are the ruins of Altun Ha, Lamanai, and others in the north.

Imho, to take the drive (from Hopkins) just to see Xunantunich (and maybe Cahal Pech) without seeing Caracol would be a waste. Consider going to S.I. for at least 1 night, to be able to visit Caracol. (It's about a 2 hour drive from SI. one way)

mayflower have some mounds, unearthing was started, however because of raiders it was recovered until expedition starts again, however the drive is very scenic to Xunantunich and Cahal Pech, if you find the right person!!! Razor edge is a local operator and they offer a lot of the same tours like the resort at cheaper price, twice as better!!!
