Which to do Rotorua or Waitamo?

We have one day and am seeking advice on which to do. We will be leaving Napier and heading to Auckland. Should we go to Rotorua for one day or choose Waitomo Caves for the one day we have?

Thank you for any advice you can give.

I'd choose Rotorua. It's a city with lots of good facilities, natural and man-made. You can explore Rotorua at a leisurely pace without having to meet a time-frame That is, if you pre-book a caves-tour. If you don't wish to experience a paid attraction with Rotorua, there is thermal activity along the lake-shore, the Government gardens are beautiful, and Kuirau Park is a public reserve where you can see mud-pools and boiling water. Rotorua is easy to reach from Napier, with less of a detour to get to.

That is a very long day - you have 6 hours just driving. Assuming an early start & lunch on arrival in Rotorua, you could fit in one quick look at a thermal park (eg Wai-o-tapu) & it will be time to get going again.
