Outer Banks with 1 and 2 year old

We're hoping to plan a vacation to the Outer Banks this July (only time husband can get off work). We'll be taking our 1 and 2 year old. We'd love a beachfront rental, but other than that, is there any advice on which areas are better for little ones? Our main interests are kid-friendly restaurants, biking with the kids and a beach without too much of a slope to hang out on with the kids. I've heard the surf can get really rough in places, so we'd like to avoid that if possible. Thank you!

Are you especially wanting to go to the OBX? There are other gentle beaches in NC. The OBX is great, but it's a little rougher, though not terribly rough. Surfers really like it there vs some of the other options.

The center section of the area has more to do than say the northern or southern ends, but each will have places to take kids. The beaches and slopes change somewhat each day or week or month so predicting that is impossible. Nags Head has a lot of beach and South Nags Head does too and it is close to lots of places to go. I would look in South Nags Head.

The beach sand is not hard packed like it is in Hilton Head, so don't count on bike riding actually on the beach. Anywhere in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills or Kitty Hawk would probably fit the bill. Some days the ocean is calm, others not. Try the soundside beach behind Jockey's Ridge on a day the ocean is too rough. Outer Banks Brewing Station is an especially kid-friendly restaurant, with good food fro grown up s as well. Others that spring to mind are Pamlico Jack's in Nags Head and Capt'n Franks in Kitty hawk.

Do book ASAP if you want oceanfront, especially in July. We have a house in South Nags Head and the beach is nice and wide, but anywhere in the OBX the ocean can have big waves and strong currents. This weekend there were some nice tidal pools that would be appropriate, but that can change. Maybe a condo with a pool? If you stay in Southern Shores there is a nice soundside beach for owners and renters and that's shallow and totally calm water.
