driving to Duck -- itinerary help

We are spending a week in Duck in April. on the way from Florida to NY We should be travelling along Rt 64/264. Looking for suggestions along the way and for the area. We want to see the Wright Bros, go to Okracoke and Roanoke and go to wildlife preserves.

Reataurant and itinerary suggestions would be great. How is the weathr in early April?

thanks

Ocracoke is a LOOONG way from Duck. If you don't mind a full-day journey, you can stay in Beaufort on your way north and take the Cedar Island ferry to Ocracoke. Eat lunch and explore the island, then drive to the Hatteras Ferry at the north end of the island. The ferry is running longer than usual due to some shoaling, so plan for an hour and half, and then a 2-hour drive to get to Duck. Once you are settled there, everything else is an easy drive - south to the Wright Brothers Memorial and Roanoke Island, north to the four-wheel-drive area where the wild ponies are.

The weather can still be very chilly in early April. It is going to be nice, but not warm next week. Only highs in the low 50's. Too cold for the ocean.

What obxmaslin said on the ferry . You might catch it and visit Ocracoke on your way north, Just be sure to make reservations for the ferry and you will have to be on schedule too. You can go to this web site and get more info.

Please tell me about the beach area in Poteskeet Duck. From Mantiac Court how far to walk into the village? Do they allow parking on the streets in this area?

It will be about 1/2 mile to 1 mile walk, depending on where you are going. But there are parking lots/spaces in front of the various shops and restaurants.

Duck favorite places to eat are (1) Aqua (2) Blue Point and (3) Red Sky . . . places to avoid (1) Sunset Grille and (2) Fishbones

For one day, head up to Corolla (15-20 mins north) to visit the Currituck Lighthouse and Whalehead Club (next to each other). Stop by Tim Buck II for a meal at North Banks Raw Bar and Grill or Mike Dianna's Grill. If you feel adventurous, try Rick's Jeep Tours to go into 4 wheel drive territory and see the wild horses.

Another day, spend on Roanoke/Manteo. Visit the Roanoke Island Festival Park for a bit of history on the Elizabeth II, the Lost Colony recreation, and the museum there. Also check into the aquarium for a quaint but nice experience. We always eat at Big Al's for a fun 1950's coca cola lunch experience, but its the kids who love it. Strolling along the water front shops stopping at the Manteo booksellers is a required activity. On the drive back, stop at Jockey's Ridge on the left in Nagshead and walk up on the east coasts largest sand dune for beautiful views of the ocean and sound along with a surreal feeling of being in the desert surrounded by so much sand. Stop by Awful Arthur's for a steak or seafood while viewing the ocean.
