Things to do

Staying at Ocean Reef Suites in KDH Memorial Day? Any reviews of these suites? Whats the weather and ocean temp like during that time of the year? Any particular beaches to check out north or south? Restaurant suggestions? Much appreciated

You must be talking about the Best Western Ocean Reef. I can't comment on it. The last time I was there was before we bought our house in 1991. I know they have upgraded it a couple times since then!!

Thanks OBX200!

What are your top 5 restaurants?

Favorite beach? Any must sees during my 5 day stay? (wish it could be longer)

Air temperature can be decent, but the water can be on the chilly side through June. It was tolerable in mid-June, mind you, but it is likely to be a bit cooler in late May. Have you done other East Coast beach trips in May as a point of reference?

As far as restaurants go, I strongly recommend Blue Moon Beach Grille and South Beach Grille in Nags Head (Blue Moon is on the northern end of NH). You're also near the Outer Banks Brewing Station which I haven't been to (yet) but have heard good things about it.

You're also very close to the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kitty Hawk, Wild Horse Adventure Tours in Corolla and Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head. All are within a reasonable drive.

The Brewing Station is great, and very close to you. It is family-friendly all day, and then becomes the young adult hangout after 10pm, with bands or DJs and tons of people. Food is delicious, people are friendly and beer is excellent!

The beach in front of your hotel will be fine, but if you want to travel, head south to Coquina Beach at the very south end of Nags Head, or cross the Bonner Bridge to visit Pea Island. Both are more secluded, although it's hard to say on Memorial Day weekend.

Other restaurants nearby that are worth checking out include Food Dudes just down the street, Kill Devil Grill at milepost 9.75, and Mama Kwan's next to the McDonald's on the bypass. JK's has great steaks and ribs if you want to spend money, and Stop N Shop at the corner of the beach road and Ocean Bay Blvd around milepost 8.5 has great sandwiches and beach supplies.
