Outer Banks in early May

It seems like this might be a good time for a week's stay. Not sure where to stay, to stay in 1 spot or 2, or how to start with lodgings. Wanting slow, beachy, relaxed & non-touristy, but with restaurant options. Any advice??

Check out Ocracoke Island. There are no houses on the beach so if you want to stay right on the beach this would not be a good choice for you. The beach is all National Seashore--truly gorgeous. You will find some good restaurants in town. Two good places to start looking for Ocracoke rentals are Ocracoke Island Realty and Blue Heron Realty.

There wasn't a single spot in the Outer Banks that I didn't like. If you want a non-touristy area, I'd suggest any of the areas on Hatteras Island.

Early May is a great time to go. We always go first week, although this year doing last week of April. The weather has always been nice, prices are great, and the crowds are low. Gets a little cool at night which makes swimming cold, but we've usually always been able to get in the ocean/pool (it IS cold, but work up a little sweat in the sun and it feels good). Has been times where it's unbearable though.

As for places to stay, I'll also recommend Hatteras Island. It's laid back, but there are restaurants around. Avon would be a nice location for you. That's where I started out in the OBX (prefer Rodanthe now). It's the only town with a major grocery store (Food Lion), and you're pretty convenient to all the restaurants on the island.

It is very quiet everywhere in the OBX in early May. You won't need to go all the way down to Hatteras to achieve peace and quiet. Do you want to rent a house for the week or a motel? Houses are really affordable that time of the year. It is quieter on the northern beaches (Duck, Corolla) and South Nags Head than Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills. If you want to get oriented on your options check out the forum www.obxconnection.com. They have a list of all the rental agencies, restaurants and motels and there is great conversation about the different areas.
