Where to stay to be in walking distance of good bars?

This is the first time going to a beach where there isn't a huge nightlife scene or casino or things to do at night.

Do bars stay open late and are they any fun?

Should I stay in KDH or Nags Head?

Either place would be convenient to what you're looking for. Those are the more commercialized areas of the Outer Banks. I'm not sure what constitutes "fun" in your opinion, but there are a lot of places with good food and drinks. Bars seem to stay open until about 2 am. Just check with the individual establishment(s) that you want to hit.

Our family has rented houses within walking distance of Tortuga's Lie, which has a really fun bar. The best strategy would be to pick a bar/restaurant then a house within a few blocks. Its pretty easy to do. I would pick one on the beach road rather than the bypass though. Kelly's and the Brewing Station, both good bars, are on the bypass.

All the other suggestions are good but I would like to suggest one more Ocracoke has a great late night crowd There are several places to start but most end up at Gaffer’s Sport Pub or Howard’s Pub and Raw Bar and Restaurant.. As long as your not driving from these places there is seldom any problem. and every place is in walking distance there
