family trip in April

Hi Everyone, we're thinking about heading to the Outer Banks in April for a spring break trip with the kids (10/8 at time of travel).

What can we expect that time of the year in terms of weather? Crowds? Are there some places that are better than others to stay? We've never been there and don't really even know how to begin. Should we look into a house or hotel?

Thanks!

The ocean will be way too cold to get in. The weather will be chilly. There will be no crowds at all. We are not a "spring break" location so we may not be your cup-of-tea.

This area is more "family style" so walks on the beach, family stuff, putt-putt, lazer tag, bike riding, kayaking, fishing and shopping are your main events that time of year.

The majority of people who visit the Outer Banks stay in vacation rental. There are thousands and in every price range. It's way better than a hotel. Cheaper too. You can stay in an oceanfront home and everyone can have their own bedroom for the price of two hotel rooms. Especially at that time of year.

You don't want to use a vacation rental on this site. They are paid for by the companies to be here. The reviews are often misleading and written by the marketing teams themselves.

Sun Realty is one of my family's favorites but other companies out here (www.sunrealtync.com) But others are Twiddy, Carolina Designs, Stan White, Beaches Realty. And they are plenty more. That time of year I would recommend Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills. They are central to the entire Outer Banks and you can easily take say excursions north or south if you wanted. KDH and NH have the most restaurants and attractions (Wright Brothers) and at that time of the year not crowded at all.

I would stay away from Corolla and Duck unless you plan on spending a lot more money.

First, the weather is completely changeable. You can have highs in the 60's, then a spike to near 80, then a drop into the 50's or 40's.

Especially for your first stay, keep to the Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head area. This is where there is the most to do, almost everything is open here this time of year, and the area has the most shops and restaurants.

I agree wit the Kitty Hawk to Nags Head suggestion, and would favor Nags Head. It's a little more quiet, but still very close to everything. Weather that time of year can be chilly, but we do get the occasional warm early spring. Usually spring is later here, and we have a longer, milder fall season. April is really hard to predict. Most everything will be open, and there will be no crowds, so that's a real plus.
