There's only one way that I know of and that is by train. It's easier, cheaper and quicker from Birmingham Internatiobal than Manchester Airport. There are a couple of through trains a day, otherwise you have an easy change at Machynlleth, but they do take upwards of 4.5 hours

trains run from Birmingham International (the station for the airport, accessable by 'sky train' which is on the departures level at the airport ) to Machynlleth from 08.09 then every 2 hours up to 20.09 hrs, which is 7 trains a day. On arrival at Machynlleth you would have about 10 minutes to wait for at train to Portmadog, the last one being 21.24 hrs, so in fact the last train from Birmingham would not connect with the Porthmadog train. The total journey time would be 3 hours & 40 minutes. For timetables go to www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk

Another option, although very limited, is a National Express. There is only one connection a day, both from Birmingham Airport and Manchester Airport.

Timetable for Birmingham International Airport:

BIA 13:00 > Porthmadog 20:05 (1 change at Birmingham Coach Stn)

Porthmadog 8:00 > BIA 15:20 (1 change at Birmingham Coach Stn)

Fares: Adult: 28GBP one way, from 42GBP for return ticket, discounts for seniors, children and youths.

Travel time: about 7 hrs

Timetable for Manchester Airport:

MA 15:20 > Porhmadog 20:05 (1 change at Chester)

Porthmadog 8:00 > MA 13:45 (1 change at Chester)

Fares: Adult: 25GBP one way, from 32GBP return ticket. Discounts for children, seniors and youths.

Travel time: about 5 hrs.

Can't find a train from Birmingham International to Porthmadog that does the journey in less than 4 hours 30 minutes. Please note that there will be new timetables in operation by May next year so you should check nearer the date of travel.

Yes, you are quite right, the journey time is 2 hrs 40 mins B'ham to Mach, then1 hr 48 mins Mach to Porthmadog, I didn't add the odd 48 mins on (maths never was my strong point !). I wouldn't worry too much about the timetable changing, it is usually the same throughout the year.

From Birmingham airport.Trains at 10.09,12.09.14.09,18.09,will take you to portmadog, eitherwith one change or no change, fare is less than £20 one way if booked in advance.[collect ticket at airport station when you get there.Takes 4&half hrs.

From Manchester airport. Take any train to Piccadilly then change to Llandudno train.they run hourly.Change again at Chester for Bangor train. At Bangor you need bus from outside station to first caernarfon and maybe change buses for Porthmadog. There are afew buses run direct from Bangor to Port but not many, more by changing at caernarfon

Usually the Birmingham train has four carriages, when it gets to Machynlleth it splits into two. The first two carriages go on to Aberystwyth & the rear two to Pwllheli, therefore if you were going to Porthmadog make sure you get onto the rear of the train. That isn't always the rear as it comes into the station at Birmingham International as I think it goes out in the same direction that it comes in, so the front becomes the rear.
