Costa Brava in mid-October??

We will be in Barcelona in early/mid October of next year and are considering a few days on the coast in Costa Brava. Is this a good time of year to visit or are a lot of places closed and the end of tourist season? Is the weather still decent - we aren't expecting it to be real beach weather and are ok with that.

Where would be a good base at this time of year - would prefer somewhere on the coast and would consider a day trip to Girona? Would we do ok with limited Spanish, mostly English at this time of year?

What activities would you recommend at this time of year in this area?

The weather is usually good in October, this year there were people swimming in the sea as it was so warm. Most places close at the end of the month, so you should be ok. If you want to stay somewhere with beautiful coves and wonderful views, Begur would be a good base. You can get to Girona, Figueres in an hour and Barcelona in one and a half hours.

You should be fine with a little Spanish.

Deb:

If you have a car you can do a day trip to Besalu, one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Spain.

Besalu is pretty, but there are many pretty villages closer to Begur and Palafrugell if you don't want to travel too far - Peratallada, Monells, Pals as examples. In fact, most of the villages around this area have an ancient medieval heart, but you do have to walk into the village centre to find them as the streets are too narrow for cars.

We swim regularly in the sea until mid-September - this year until about the last week of September. Tourists tend to swim be swimming into October and there are still sunbathers out in September, but the beaches are quieter than the heights of August. There's a little more chance of a breeze in September, but then we'd just head to a beach facing away from the wind.
