Visiting wine and olive oil producers near Modica

Hi,

We (two families with young children in the age range 1-7) are going to Cefalu (2 nights) and Modica (5 nights) in July.

We are staying at Agriturismo il Granaio outside Modica. We would like to visit wine - and olive oil producers in the area. Can anyone recommend some nice producers?

Recommendations for things the kids would enjoy in the area, would also be nice.

We stayed a week in the same area last summer and enjoyed the beaches, especially at Sampieri and Donnalucata and a visit to the famous chocolate producer in Modica. We had a really nice time visiting the olive oil producer Piano Grillo in Chiaramonte Gulfi where we bought a five liter can to bring back with us:)

Best wishes,

Knutta

Hi knutta,

Eastern Sicily is rich with wineries and Ragusa province produces some of Sicily’s best wines!

There are also a few good options in the Cefalù area.

Visit Azienda Agricola Gulfi in Chiaramonte Gulfi for wines and olive oil!

It would be worth the drive to Palma di Montechiaro for a visit to Azienda Mandranova. Azienda Mandranova in Palma di Montechiaro produces high quality olive oil. With 10,000 olive trees, Mandranova was named Sicily’s best olive oil in 2008 by Cronache di Gusto - Best olive oil: Silvia Di Vincenzo (Mandranova - Palma di Montechiaro, Agrigento).

You can visit an original olive oil press in Castelbuono. Contact Sicilian Experience.

Siracusa is wonderful for children!

Kids enjoy Siracusa's aquarium! It's located on Ortigia with entry from the marina below, and all aspects of Mediterranean marine life are explored.

Your children could enjoy the Piccolo Teatro dei Pupi on Ortigia’s Jewish quarter at Via della Giudecca, 17 (0931 465540). There’s also a workshop where you would be able to buy puppets at #19.

Certainly the very reasonably priced and enjoyable boat trips around Ortigia and out to the sea caves along the mainland would be enjoyable for a family. Each excursion is only 10,00 euro per person – These excursions depart from the base of the bridge as you arrive on Ortigia – You’ll see the kiosk. Each excursion lasts an hour and the excursions depart on the hour from 9.00 to 20.00. Ask about a combination ticket that lasts about 01h40, an exceptionally good value that you could probably negotiate for about 15,00 euro per person. The Sea Caves Tour is especially enjoyable.

The children may also enjoy the "Acqua Verde" water park near Cefalù.

Cronache di Gusto’s “Best in Sicily 2011” has named Piano Grillo in Chiaramonte Gulfi the best oil producer in Sicily, and Arianna Occhipinti in Victoria the best wine producer.

We have just returned from yet another wonderful trip to Sicily. I will write a trip report when I get the chance.

We had a wonderful visit at Piano Grillo last summer. We drove by on the way out of Chiaramonte. My wife insisted on ringing the bell to the estate. We were warmly welcomed by a lovely family wo invited us to lunch and shoved us arond the estate. The husband was an amatour musician and being a pianist myself, I played a piece on his piano. We bought a five litre can of oil to bring back to Norway and he gave us a bottle of a cru oil. It was the best oil we have ever tasted!
