Calais to Pezenas

We are thinking of visiting Pezenas in August. Car hire seems to be quite expensive - so we are thinking of taking car ferry to Calais and driving. What area is a good choice to stop over or does anybody know how much a car train would cost?

Have never travelled to this part of France before so not very knowledgeable on best way to travel.

Have you considered flying Luton to Béziers and taking the bus to Pézenas? Much quicker and cheaper.

Thank you for your reply.

We did look at flying, which as you say is quite reasonable - but then we would like to have a look at other parts of Langudoc during our stay and a car would make this so much easier. There seems to be so much variation in the area - beaches, mountains, Carcassone - and we would like to see them all!

I drive this route fairly often. It is approx 950 km.

Surprisingly, the A750 - A9 - A7 - A6 - A31 - A26 route is quicker if you hit Lyon at the right time. It is busier, but totally misses Paris. Driving at the speed limit, stopping for fuel and toilet only it takes around 9 hrs subject to accidents, hold ups etc.

The A75 - A71 - A10 - ?? - A1 - A26 route is quieter, prettier, but Paris always seems to make it a slower route. I've tried the periperique, the Francilienne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francilienne), going East, going West, going through the centre and it always takes a long time. Allow 10 hrs.

Because of the time difference, it is difficult to get an early start, particularly if you are starting from North, East or West of London. I usually stop overnight in Calais, and leave early.

If you want a more relaxed trip taking two days there are some nice places to stay.

The Rhone valley route allows a stop over in the Reims / Dijon area.

The central route over the Massif Central is more rural and allows stops between Bourges and Clermont Ferrand. People have recommended this as a nice stopover : http://www.limousin-chambres-bb.com

We are driving down to Cap d’agde for the fifth time in August. We have done it various ways, leaving home at 2am, 6am, 9pm, all with one stop at Dijon or Lyon - can’t remember which one - and Avignon. This year I have persuaded my husband - who does all the driving - to leave home (Midlands) at 9am on Thursday morning, stopping around 5pm at Reims and then the next day heading down to Nimes where we expect to arrive again around 5pm. I’m hoping this will be a more relaxed route. We are keen to avoid Paris as we too have found this slows down the journey and the chance of getting lost is easier (husband always jokes that one time we were about to drive past the Eiffle Tower!).

We usually take the other route back, mainly so we can take the Millau bridge, as we have driven that way a couple of times before the bridge was there and it’s a lot quicker with the bridge.

What about flying to Beziers and hiring a car? It will probably end up cheaper than the train with your own car.

We flew from Bristol to Toulouse, got a train to Narbonne, hired a car at the station, and flew home from Beziers. It was a perfect combination for the various needs of our trip and very straightforward.
