Ella to Bentota

2 of us will be travelling with a tour company to Ella and then doing some walking etc., but then need to get from Ella to Bentota independently. Anyone know the best way to do this journey and approx cost?

Hi there,

Ella-Haputale-Ratnapura road and then shortcut to Bentota. Car 7 hours and Rs 15,000; public transport (bus) maybe 10-11 hours with 2 transfers though lots cheaper.

All the best,

Hi,

Welcome to TripAdvisor.

The best way is absolutely hiring a car/van with driver. The cost should be approx. LKR 13,000 for the 200 km drive.

Going by bus is cheap, but will involve several changes. Train is via Colombo and will take 10-11 hours at best.

Thanks Erik, just what I needed. Can you also suggest a good way to arrange a driver? Are there likely to be drivers in Ella who would do the trip, and if so, how do we find a reliable one?

Hi,

Best in the eye,s of most people would be to hire a local car and driver to take you but that would be by far the most expensive. Probably somewhere in the region of 12000 to 14000 rupees.

Or,, the way I'd go , is to catch the bus.

Easiest way to get a bus and a guaranteed seat is to get a tuk tuk or local bus from Ella to Bandarawella and from there get a bus that starts at that point and will take you as far as Panadura on the west coast. Change in Panadura for any of the many buses travelling south on the coast road.

You can get a bus nearer to Ella than the Bandarawella bus station.

The main road in Ella is on a slope. Walk up the slope and just keep walking along the country lane that you're then on til you get to a T junction . Most people would get a tuk tuk instead of walking that lane.

As you reach that " T " junction, just go about 30 metres around the corner to the left and you can get a bus there.

I caught a bus on that route a few weeks ago. It left Badulla about 9 AM and we boarded it at that " T " junction at about 9:30.

Again, that bus takes you to Panadura where you change for any south bound bus.

Fare on the buses is a few rupees. Too few to count or remember.

Getting that bus at Bandarawella has the advantage of being one of the first on and getting a seat. Getting the bus en-route there's no guarantee.

Hello again,

Ask any guest house owner in Ella for info regarding a car or van hire.. The owner of place I usually stay, The Sun Top Inn, will either give you a price for him and his van or his brother who also operates a taxi van.
