Queenstown to Wanaka

Which is the best route to get from Queenstown to Wanaka in a 6 berth motorhome? We were looking at doing the adventure park at Cardrona but just wondering what the road conditions were like going that way to Wanaka? Also, any suggestions on what to do in Wanaka? We will be there late September with two children aged 6 and 10.

Late Sept either road shouldn't have ice or snow issues, though you will know that better on the day.

The Crown Range is NZ's highest public road and the section of road called the zig-zags has extremely sharp hairpin bends. When it says 15kph, take notice! If not confident of doing the road then don't. A large campervan with a nervous driver is not suited for the road.

The route via Cromwell is easier driving and your kids will love stopping to watch the bungee jumping off the Kawarau bridge. You will also pass many tempting vineyards, some offering excellent lunches.

You can always make Cardrona Adventure Park a 20 minute trip the next day from Wanaka, rather than a visit enroute.

What to do in Wanaka? Everything! You can bike, hike, swim, kayak, river rafting (excellent family trips), jet boat, fish, horse ride, sky-dive, Puzzling World, paintball, golf... the list goes on.

Also visit the movies. The cinema is unique, the kids can sit in a car, their own drive in movie!

Enjoy :)

Thanks WanakaLakes for the tips. We remember about 12 years ago going from Wanaka to Queenstown along the so called "shortcut" along the infamous zig zag roads and didn't know if the roads had changed at all.

We will take your advice and go via Cromwell. I think the vineyards have won me over ;-) Thanks for your attraction advice too.

We'll continue to tweek the itinerary. That movie idea sounds good too.
