One island or two?

When people travel to Fiji, do the majority just stay on one island, Denarau? Or is it common to go to another part way through the trip? If so, what are some other popular islands? Is a ferry the preferred way to travel?

Thank you!

Denarau is not an island. It is "separated" from the "mainland" by a channel - hard to even call it a river. Big hotels, not good beaches, murky water. If you want to stay in a big hotel similar to any in the world it will suit, otherwise head for Mamanuca or Yasawa resorts, or some other part of Fiji. What are you requirements and budget - then you will get more helpful suggestions to suit.

When we head to Fiji we stay at one resort..........Mana Island.........for the whole of our holiday. Depends on how long you are going for. You don't want to loose too many days travelling between resorts. If you want to see other resorts you can always do a day trip.

If you are staying up to one week and want rest and relaxation, then I would recommend one resort only. If, however, you are staying at least 10-12+ days and also want to incorporate seeing that little bit more, then I would recommend one island in the Yasawa group and one in the Mamanuca group. That will allow for slightly different experiences and also different day trip options to see / experience a variety of things.

Denarau is filled with your classic Sheratons, Raddisons etc. They sit on a black sand beach. If you are content to sit by a 5 star resort pool and sip cocktails and do the odd boat cruise / inland day trip, then this is the place for you. If your image of Fiji is white island sands and blue waters, head to the Mamanuca and Yasawa group of islands.

The Yasawa Flyer will connect you with numerous islands in the Mamanuca group and all of the islands in the Yasawa group (excluding Yasawa Island, which is accessed by seaplane only).

Also, several of the islands in the Mamanuca group have their own transport boats. You will need to check their website transfer options.

You can also take the Turtle Island seaplane out to the Yasawa islands at F300 per person each way.

Happy travels!
