"Must See" in Lofoten & outdoor activities in March?

Hi everyone. We'll be In Lofoten for 2 days here in March and I was wondering what some "must see" places are. Also, are there any outdoor hikes or activities you can do in March or is it too cold?

Thanks!

As for most of Norway outside the cities, nature is the attraction. Lofoten in late winter is also about fishing for arctic cod - this is the main event of the year. March is winter, so "hikes" would be cross country ski-ing or snowshoeing. The islands do not cover a large area, so if you have a car you can visit any nook and cranny during your two days. Perhaps go all the way south to Reine. The western/outer part of the islands have the most dramatic scenery but also more windy and exposed to the elements.

Perhaps visit the Viking Museum.

The world championship cod fishing in Svolvær in medio March is definately worth seeing. http://www.vmiskreifiske.no/?lang=en

The Lofoten International Chamber Music Festival in the beginning of March is very good. http://www.lofotenfestival.com/default.aspx

As mentioned before. The nature is amazing. You should check out places like Henningsvær, Reine, Å, Stamsund, Ballstad. A trip from Stamsund to Svolvær (or the other way) with the Hurtigruten Coastal Steamer (www.hurtigruten.no) is a good choice, if the weather is good.

The ski resort in Stamsund may still be open (lofotenalpinsenter.com)

There is also an excelent hostel in Stamsund, where you'll probably be able to hire a boat and go fishinh

The viking museum is great. http://www.lofotr.no/

There are numerous art galleries throughout the island.

There are some rafting experiences, nature safaris, fishing trips, northern lights and so on, see www.lofoten.info

Last of all, I would recommend that you try the surfing at Unstad (webcam: http://www.arcticsurfcam.no/ surfcamp: http://www.unstadcamping.no/ )

Agree with all the above except the comment about snow cover which is very unpredictable anywhere in Norway near the sea, especially at low level. You could very well do some enjoyable walks at low level along and around the beaches on the north-west side of the islands or just in the countryside near the fishing villages on the south east side. Just hire a car and drive around and you'll find the most amazing scenery everywhere.

Check out www.yr.no before you go for current weather conditions. Enter a place name and scroll down the local pages for live web cams (there's a lot of snow there right now).
