We would like to do some easy independent walking on Svinafellsjokull Glacier (without joining any tours). Is it possible? Any special equipment necessary? If yes, where is the best place to rent it?

What are the most picturesque glaciers (accessible by 2 wd) that can be seen from the lower level (without climbing on ice)?

You should definetely join a tour or hire a guide for the glacier hiking. There have been tradic accidents and even a death last year when people have attempted to do this on their own. The glacier has lots of hidden crevasses and really requires someone who knows it.
