Zion/Bryce

Retired East Coast teachers who love the NPs planning a trip to Zion and Bryce in June. Could rent cabin thru VRBO in Duck Creek subdivision near Dixie Nat'l Forest for all or part of visit. Are considering 5 days at pearl or Cable Mt hotels then using cabin to visit Bryce. Thoughts?

Also any recommendations as to guided trips in either park.

AND should one drive or fly to Grand Canyon?

Thanks to everyone. SuzCt

Stay as close to or inside that parks if you can. Springdale is perfect for Zion. The cabin is over 50 miles from Bryce and far from the Zion entrance. That's a 90 minute commute each way. Cedar Breaks is a beautiful area, but personally, I'd do a couple of day at Bryce or at Rubys Inn just outside the park, and then go in the opposite direction up UT 12 to Boulder or Torrey and Capital Reef NP. You can self tour all of those parks plus the Grand Canyon NP.

And you want to drive to the Grand Canyon and once again book lodging inside the park. Two nights is probably sufficient unless you intend to do a lot of hiking. You don't say when you intend to do this trip. Let us know. It will matter.

If you are coming to see the parks then you'll want to stay closer to them. If you just want a relaxing vacation with options for a day trip into the parks, then Duck Creek may be okay. Guided tours into the parks would not be needed unless you want to do a canyoneering trip in Zions. http://www.zionadventures.com/ or http://www.zionrockguides.com/ etc.

You might consider a mule trip in Bryce. http://www.canyonrides.com/

Guided tours in the surrounding area http://www.zionnational-park.com/guide.htm

So 5 days in Springdale at either of your choices would be great. Then stay a couple nights at the lodge in Bryce or the new Best Western Grand in Bryce Canyon City. You might also look into staying in Escalante and taking a tour of the Grand Staircase-Escalante monument. http://www.ecohike.com/

You cannot fly to the Grand Canyon, you could take a flight tour but you'll have to drive. There are two rims. The north is closer to Bryce and Zion and is a personal favorite; the South is much more developed and has many more options for lodging and food.

There is much to see in the parks and in the surrounding areas. Are you active or more sightseeing/photography?

You have already recieved excellent advice from RedRox and Kbecjeans, so all I can really do is say that I agree with what they have told you.

The biggest thing is to stay near the park or, even better, on the parks. The lodges at both Zion and Bryce Canyon are nice but rustic and the food on the parks is better than average. But the big advantage is that you are right there. All you have to do in the morning is roll out of bed and walk into the beauty of the parks. Particularly nice at BC, where teh lodge is, what, 50 yards from the rim (ok, maybe its 100 yards, certainly no more than a pitching wedge).

We're doing a Zion/Bryce trip in June of 2010 too. We usually like to rent a condo and cabin and stay put for seven nights or so, but we;re not doing that here because we want to be close to the parks. We're staying in hotels that have a little bigger rooms and mini refrigerators and microwaves (the Desert Peal in Springdale for three nights inear Zion and the new Best Western Grand right outside of Bryce Canyon National Park). Our first day will be in overnight in Las Vegas as we're flying in and out of there and thought we'd catch one of the Cirque du Soliel shows our first night.
