Trip planning for first timer this Easter weekend.

We are family of four with two kids aged 14 and 10 visiting Yosemite for the first time this Easter Weekend. We have booked our hotel in El Portal for two nights and will drive from Los Angeles Friday morning. Please help us plan our trip with things to do and see in the park.

Should we enter the park by CA-41 or CA-140 assuming that we arrive at Oakhurst by noon?

Will we be able to do any skiing at Badger Pass this Weekend?

Do we need tire chains to drive to Badger Pass?

Right now the Badger Pass Road is open & clear. The forecast calls for a slight chance of showers, so keep an eye on things.

From the website:

"Our Springfest is on March 30, 2013!! Save the date for some exciting activities and races. Most of all the World Famous Dummy Race!!! The Adam Burns Band will be playing out on our sundeck for our Springfest.

Our last day of the season will be on March 31, 2013." yosemitepark.com/DailySnowReport.aspx

Ideas about what to do in winter can also be gleaned from winter Trip Reports in the Top Questions, Activities for Families in the Top Questions, and some of the options in the Itineraries. Look to the upper right.

I'd spend Friday afternoon at Mariposa Grove, then drive an hour to the Valley (nice late afternoon light?) and head out to El Portal.

if you arrive in Oakhurst by noon, it would be a good idea to drive up 41 N into the valley also stopping at the Mariposa Grove on way and spending some time exploring the magnificent trees. I always like to drive into the valley from the south entrance ( 41 N) and treat myself to the first glimpse of the valley at Tunnel View. And thrn drive out 140 W along the Merced river.

the Tunnel View is my wife's favorite so we always go that route.

After Oakhurst you'll pass the Sugar Pine Railroad and that's always a temptation.
