Road Trip September Vegas-Yosemite-San Francisco

Hi there,

From Australia My husband and 2 children (2yr old and 5mth old) and planning a trip to Vegas to watch an ironman event in September.

Please any advice on then travelling back to san francisco via Yosemite National Park would be great.

Which is the best route to take at this time of year and which spots to stay at??

Either in camper van...where can you stay??

Or hire car and booking accom along the way???

We were thinking -

2 nights vegas

1 night death valley

2 nights yosemite

1 night Monterey

3 nights San Francisco

Then 4/5 nights Hawaii before back to Melbourne, Australia.

Would this be enough time to enjoy each spot??

Thankyou!

We'll be happy to assist you with your Yosemite plans here. Your California state forum thread is the best place to discuss the overall itinerary.

Read the Top Questions in the upper right for ideas of where to stay (lodging) and what to do with kids. Then after you figure out what kind of trip this is, we'll chat about campgrounds or lodging.

Thank you so much,

What if we were to drive through death valley ( i hear it can be HOT) and stay at Lone Pine for 1 night then drive from there to Tioga Pass .

Would we be best to stay at Tuolome Meadows for a night

then Yosemite Valley for 2??

Or go straight to Yosemite Valley for 2/3 nights?

We would be wanting to take a few short walks along the drive, but mainly be able to relax at the end of a day, go for a walk, get some food and enjoy the evening.

If we rented a camper van - do we have to book into campsites??

Otherwise we are open to a car and lodge accommodation if that would be easier??

Thankyou again!

You cannot just park a campervan or RV just anywhere. In most places, you need to have an actual campsite. In Yosemite NP, it is illegal to sleep over night in a vehicle that is not parked in a campsite.

So yes, you'd need campground reservations with a campervan.

If you're planning lots of miles, I think a car is easier than an RV or campervan. But it's your trip and you get to do it your way.

Now you have three threads going with the same questions. I hope this doesn't get confusing to folks. Maybe just keep the California one going with your main search / itinerary planning.

Hi,

If you are going in an RV make sure you are allowed to go through death valley. We are doing a similar trip next year in Sept and we miss the window for being allowed to go through Death Valley in an RV by a week. I believe most companies don't allow it from May- mid sept

DAM, I know you are not a regular RVer - but have you ever spent any time at all in a modern motorhome?

True a rental RV can be more expensive than motels/car. True it requires some planning ahead and overall one has less flexibility.

However, for the OP with two *very* young children, it may be a much more convenient and comfortable way to travel. No checking in and out of motels, no strange beds each night, no unpacking and toting diapers and all the paraphernalia that comes with young children & babies . . . and they also will have their toilet and kitchen (think baby foods) handily with them all the time.

A car and motel is not necessarily "far better" for all travellers :-)
