Yosemite itinerary - one day off the beaten path

We will be staying in Fresno, and visiting Yosemite for one day (June 24th) before heading to San Francisco. What's the best route into Yosemite and how early should we plan to get there? We are willing to get up early to make the most of our day. We love to hike (moderate trails) and would love to visit lesser known areas of the park. Hoping to get views of some of the parks more famous icons from afar. I know it will be busy so just wanting to avoid some of the huge crowds.

These are less visited but have good payoff in terms of the view, with less than half-moderate difficulties (i.e. many people can do it):

North Dome (to have a close up view of Half Dome across the Tenaya Canyon)

Taft Point (2000 to 3000 feet sheer vertical drop cliff face)

Artist Point (a 0.5 mile, 500 feet climb from the parking lot of Tunnel View - same iconic Yosemite "money shot" as Tunnel View, but none of the crowd and tourist chatters, or car door bangings and kids crying.)

Staying in Fresno is a big mistake and means you have reduced your time in the park by 4-5 hours.

I'd want to be there early, like 7 am to watch the sunrise on the north walls and feel the cool of the night warm up.

Right now there's a Half Dome Tented Camp accommodation available for the night of Jun 23. I suggest you get that ASAP so you awaken in the park and have the full day there

The less traveled areas are Hetch-Hetchy and maybe Tuolumne Meadows. But you really only have time to see the valley floor briefly and maybe drive up along Tioga Pass Road to Olmstead Point and Tenaya Lake.

There's a great magic to being in Yosemite. Try to actually stay in the park and maximize your time there.

We have 2 adults and 3 teen daughters. The Half Dome tent is only for 2 people. Would we be better off staying in the Oakhurst area instead of Fresno? Too late to book much else closer.

Don't give up on Half Dome cabins. They have 5-bed canvas tent cabins. The basic tent sizes are about the same. They just put more beds in the 4-bed / 5-bed configurations. Cancellations happen often because people overbooked or have last minute changes. They have hundreds of cabins so there will be some reservation changes on a daily basis. Try book some other places that are closer, with refundable bookings. Check Half Dome Village once a day and see if there is anything opens up.

Yes.

Get on the park website to click through to the Aramark reservations system and if there is any available accommodation

https:/…

Click on the Check Rates in the upper right corner to look for available space.

Dont use anything but the www.travelyosemite.com site.

There are imposter websites out there that are NOT official park websites and basically take money under false pretenses

We were able to change up our itinerary and will be staying in a Tent at Half Dome Village on Sunday 6/24. So we will wake up Monday morning in the valley. Hoping Monday will be quieter overall. Still only one day at Yosemite. Hoping to see the highlights. thanks for the advice :)
