First day itinerary - geysers and West Thumb

Here is our first day itinerary. We are coming through the south entrance with our pop-up camper after four days in Grand Teton. We are hoping to hit the main southeastern spots in one day since the rest of our trip will be focusing on wildlife more towards the eastern side of the park. Please let me know if you see anything missing and if it seems too crammed!

DAY 1 - June 21

Depart GTNP early morning north to YNP

Drive 6.8 miles from South Entrance to overlook at north end of Lewis Canyon

Park in West Thumb parking lot and find Yellowstone Lake Overlook Trailhead

- 2 mi loop to view of lake and mountains

West Thumb Geyser Basin (1/2 mi boardwalk)

Hike from Duck Lake trailhead across the West Thumb Geyser Basin parking area from Lake Overlook trailhead

-1 mi roundtrip to viewpoint of Duck and Yellowstone lakes

Turn right at Old Faithful Interchange and park at visitor center to tour Upper Geyser Basin and Black Sands Basin

- While waiting for OF to erupt, start from visitor center and circle partway around Old Faithful Geyser, keeping it on your left; walk toward Firehole River; take left fork to see Blue Star Spring before footbridge

- Retrace steps back to main walkway; stop on footbridge over the Firehole River for pretty views

Cross footbridge; trailhead to Observation Point (less than 0.5 mi) is partway up the hill for excellent views

- Cooler lunch at Observation Point

- Retrace steps back to Old Faithful

- Cross the Firehole River once again and take the left fork to walk to Anemone Geyser, Plume Geyser, Beehive Geyser, Lion Group

- Return to Sawmill Geyser and cross the trail to a smaller loop to Grand Geyser

- Continue north along Firehole River to Beauty Pool and Chromatic Pool on the right

- Turn east toward river at Spa Geyser to Riverside Geyser

- Return to main trail to Morning Glory Pool

- Follow trail south along Firehole River, take the right fork and then the second trail to the right to Daisy Geyser

- Continue on the trail away from the river to Punch Bowl Spring on the right

- Black Sand Pool is farther down the trail on the right

- Continue on the trail to Black Sand Basin to see Green Spring, Rainbow Pool, and Emerald Pool

- Return to Old Faithful Visitor Center

Drive north on Grand Loop Road and turn left into Midway Geyser Basin parking lot

- Take the clockwise loop to Excelsior Geyser, Turquoise Pool, Opal Pool, and Grand Prismatic Spring

Continue north on Grand Loop Road and turn right onto Firehole Lake Dr. (one-way loop to north) to Great Fountain Geyser

Cross Grand Loop Road to Fountain Paint Pots parking lot

- Walk from parking lot along the boardwalk to Fountain Paint Pots

Get back on Grand Loop Road north and turn left onto Firehole Canyon Drive (one-way road south)

- See Firehole Falls about 1 mi down the road

- Stop about 2.2 mi down the road at Firehole Cascade along the side loop road

- Turn left from parking lot and take Grand Loop Road north

Turn right at Madison Junction

The fun of the geysers is getting to see them go off. They are all so different. Our first trip was last summer and luckily we spent an entire day at the OF (Upper?) geyser basin. Left Lake Hotel area early that AM to make it to OF for the 8:30 AM ranger talk/tour. Saw OF and Lion erupt while on that tour. Then after the tour were lucky enough to see Riverside and later Castle but were out there for hours. There was also an Indicator while out there but Beehive wasn't acting normal that week so it did not follow. We went back to OF inn to check in that afternoon. Then I went back out myself about 5:30 PM (husband napped) to see Grand which went off about 8:30 PM. Just in time to make it back for out 9:00 PM dinner reservations. Then next AM I got up like at 6:00 AM and headed out to see Daisy geyser before we left and headed north towards Mammoth and the other geyser basins along the way.

Going back this summer and will spend another full day at the OF geyser area. :)
