Road construction dates and plans for HWY 191 South between Bozeman and Big Sky/West Yellowstone, Mt.

Expect 30 minute delays this summer. Longer delays can be expected during rock blasting.

M.A. DeAtley Construction, Inc plans on starting work on the Turn Lanes--Gallatin Canyon project starting on March 11, 2013. The work for the project consists of building turn lanes in 5 different locations. Listed below are the locations:

Moose Creek Campground (Between Bozeman and Big Sky)

Greek Creek Campground

Castle Rock (Around mile marker 64, at the north end of the Gallatin Canyon)

The plan is to construct the Red Cliff Turn Lanes during the first phase of construction. The first phase will start on March 11, 2013. Completion date is estimated at the end of May.

The second phase will be to construct Moose Creek and Greek Creek turn lanes. This work will tentatively start the beginning of June and will last through mid August.

The third phase will be to construct turn lanes at Karst Stage and Castle Rock. This phase will tentatively start mid-August with completion at the end of Sept.

Followup to original post.

The 30 minute delay is for EACH of the 5 separate locations. All 5 locations were active yesterday and today 3-28-13.

The electric company will also be replacing every power pole and power line in the Gallatin Canyon this summer. The crew is currently stopped at the far northern end of the Gallatin Canyon awaiting snow melt. Delays should be expected wherever the crew happens to be that particular day. 30 minute delays should be expected at those locations too.

I am planning a 4 day driving vacation this June from Bozeman to Yellowstone and back to Bozeman. Any suggestions regarding which area to book the hotels and a possible itinerary for driving? We are traveling with our 8 year old daughter and the idea is to see the most dramatic natural landmarks and stay in a lodging that is 3 star or above. Ideally we would like the opportunity to do some other "big sky country" daytime activities in addition to hiking the national parks such as kayaking and/or horseback riding.
