Things to Do and a good B&B in Walla Walla?

I've lived in Washington for 60 years and NEVER been to Walla Walla.

This summer my wife and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and she wants to spend a few days there.

Seems like all we can find info on is wineries which we certainly want to visit but is there anything else to see in Walla Walla?

More importantly, can anyone recommend a good B&B?

Hi Bob,

Congratulations to you and your "young bride"! There are many B & Bs in the WW area to recommend. To start with, look at the Inn at Blackberry Creek, Fat Duck Inn and Green Gables. I also like staying at the historic Marcus Whitman (preferably in the old hotel) and breakfast is included in their rates.

In addition to wineries, there are several historic sites, historic homes, the Whitman Mission National historic site, art galleries and events, outdoor activities, etc. I love the WW Farmer's Market, on Saturdays and Sundays right downtown. You may also want to spend some time exploring beyond WW, either to nearby Dayton or Milton-Freewater in Oregon.

Have you explored this site?

I've never stayed in a hotel or B & B on my visits to Walla Walla since I stay at our family farm. I like the Marcus Whitman. It's a really pretty hotel and my cousins liked the rooms. I've seen the rooms at the Maxwell House B & B, my mom is a friend of the owner, and they were really nice and I like the location. I've eaten there, too, and the food was good.

I love Fort Walla Walla. It gives you an excellent picture of farm life before the wine industry came to town and also about the early settlers. On weekends in the summer they often have re-enactors and it's fun to see their shows.

I can't really imagine that Milton-Freewater would hold your interest for long. If you want to get a little farther afield, though, I love Pendleton, Oregon. The downtown is really cute and the Tamastslikt Cultural Center's museum on the Indian reservation is quite fascinating.

I like to go to Dayton to eat and shop. It's very small but scenic and the courthouse is beautiful. Waitsburg is smaller yet but the Jim German Bar is fun and the food at Whoopemup Hollow Cafe is very good.
