They do the agricultural inspection at the airport. You can do it in advance if you like but your bags get checked either way. Just show them your coconut and they give you a sticker to put on it.
Or, Rather than take one home you can actually send it by mail. Get one of the unhusked ones and write on it with magic marker. Then get it inspected and take it to the post office with the inspection sticker. Mine cost about $10 to send to Canada. No problem.
So I can take home one with or without a husk? I am sure he would LOVE to get an unhusked one in the mail it would arrive before we are even back home but I really have little faith in that man/child getting the husk off LOL
I mailed one home from Maui. Here is the long story. It was time consuming but funny.
I never considered using an unhusked one and went to the market and bought the brown fuzzy coconut then wrote the address with magic marker. It was a challenge on that surface and a bit hard to fit it all on.
When I took it to the airport inspection place they said they had never been brought a coconut but had a giggle and gave me an inspection sticker. It wouldnt stay on so I wrapped the whole thing in packing tape.
At the post office they weighed it and charged me $9.15. It took a couple weeks but arrived safe and sound but inedible after being completely airtight for weeks.
It wasnt until May on Molokai that I realized I could have just grabbed a green/brown one from under a tree, wrote on the nice smooth surface and the inspection sticker and postage would have stuck nicely.
I imagine you can buy them already inspected at the airport. And at the markets sometimes they have fancy painted ones.
Edited: 9 years agohi how do we get the coconut inspected to make it safe to send home please
thank you fezile
I took it to the airport where they have the agricultural inspection stations. I have no idea if there are other places to get them inspected.
Also, it is not ok to just grab a coconut off the ground on someone's property. I should have clarified that previously. Seems so obvious but thought I should mention it.
lol that really is too funny!
My son wants his edible thanks haha I know he can go to the store and buy one at home in Alaska but hey he could ask for more expensive things right? I am sure I can buy a couple in the husk from the guys that sells cold coconuts to drink. I might actually consider mailing one of those, you're right, a heck of a lot easier to write on ha!
I think he has two goals, to receive a coconut in the mail, and to eat said coconut :)
But I may as well take a few extra home on the plane.
We always have pineapples shipped home and it is fun to get them a week after we get back home!
hi thank you for that info very good, however its unclear can we sent it from the airport or do we take it to the post office after inspection to post please thank you

Once the coconut has been inspected you need to bring it to a post office for mailing.
