Hawaii for Halloween 2012

My family and I (kids13 & 11), will be in Honolulu from October 30-Nov 4. We were wondering what we should do for Halloween? It'll be our first US Halloween and the kids are really excited. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Aloha jet83!!

Thank you for the information. I'd like to arrive in Honolulu and go with the flow rather than pre book, so that's good news.

Hi...we are also in Waikiki from 24 Oct - 4 Nov. Do you think we will be able to get Halloween outfits there or take our own?

Many of the world wide visitors must bring their own outfits, as it is just too amazing !

Some serious folks walking up and down Kalakaua Ave.

But, some dont ware much at all !

Have a great time,

There are many costume parties held before Halloween night.

The largest will be the Street Festival (free) held in Chinatown on Sat. October 27th.

Billed as "15,000 costumed crazies, 4 Outdoor Stages".

It is an incredible time, well worth experiencing. And, it is only one event during the multi-day celebration of Hallowbaloo. See:

There are many others parties and events. See, for a partial list;

The Hauted Lagoon is an awesome Halloween attraction in Hawaii. Here are some other great family Halloween activities on Oahu for 2012:

Enjoy! Aloha

If you really want to go to an *awesome* haunted house, depending on the age of your kids, go to Waipahu Haunted Plantation. (They should be at least 8, and if they get scared really easily, probably better to be 12.)

It is a walk through many small old plantation worker houses on the grounds of the old Waipahu Plantation. It is a little bit expensive but the fast pass is definitely worth it. It's one of the top 10 haunted houses IN THE NATION, and having lived in many places being in the military it is my favorite so far. Almost no tourists from Waikiki know about it or go there because it's a little far away. You'll need to check your bus routes or get a rental car and directions to get to it from Waikiki, but it's worth the drive.

DO NOT go right when they open at 7:00. Everyone tries to get there early to beat the line, which means no one beats the line. Go around 8:30~9:00 instead, the line will still be long but not as bad as at 7:00.

It is more the traditional ghost haunt type of scare, NOT torture and blood and guts. It's full of obake-style Asian ghosts, monsters, zombies, loud noises, and strobe lights as you wander in the dark from house to house. The actors are NOT allowed to touch you (and you are not allowed to touch them) but they WILL get up in your face. They even climb up on the roof tops to hang down and grab at you - these people like their jobs! Definitely recommended from an avid Halloween lover.

Don't mind the "must be 13 and over" warning, I've gone every year the past 4 years and lots of families bring their 8 year olds to this place. It's just their liability so if anything happens to your kids they are not responsible b/c you were warned.

In reply to _x_Jo89_x_'s question:

There is hallowbaloo street festival on weekend before Halloween, also many clubs will be doing costume parties that weekend since the holiday falls in the middle of the week. http://www.hallowbaloo.com/

Also don't forget you can check out haunted houses if you want a fun scare, they're open every weekend in October up til Halloween. Scream team is doing a zombie apocalypse themed one this year on Ala Moana. http://www.scream808.com/

The best haunted house (in my opinion, lived in Hawaii 6 years and been many places in the military) that I've ever been to though is the Waipahu Haunted Plantation. Talked about it in my other post in this thread. If torture/blood & guts are more your thing, the ones in Honolulu are probably more up your alley. http://hawaiihauntedplantation.com/

As far as costumes go (someone asked if you can find costumes in Hawaii), of course you can get costumes here! If you want interesting variety they just opened a giant Party City on Ala Moana next to Lowe's hardware store and they have tons of costumes. If you're looking for cheaper-but-still-fun, there's always Wal-Mart, they carry costumes this time of year too.

Hope you find some Halloween fun before you leave! :)
