What do you want to do? Waves or no waves?

Kanohe - No waves at all, really flat water. No people.

Kailua - Small 1/2ft waves, perfect sand. People have 100 feet between them.

Ala Moana Park - Near Waikiki, same water type, not as busy with tourists. More like a SoCalifornia beach during the week.

I think that it's warm everywhere except North Shore. It's still warm, but the lifegaurds won't let you near the water in wintertime. They were telling us to be careful and a tourist about 100 yards away was swamped by a wave and almost carried out to sea. We could hear his wife and other friends screaming from where we were standing.

If you want good sunbathing and no overcrowding I would do either Kailua Beach or Waimanalo Beach Park. The waves are gentle, the beach is clean, there are restrooms, lifeguards and so on. It is away from the Waikiki area. You will need a car, but it is a short 20-25 minute drive.

If you are looking for the least crowded area IN Honolulu---go down towards the Hale Koa and Hilton Hawaiin Village. Not really any waves and is less crowded. Hale Koa has nice tree covered parks for staying near the beach, but still in the shade.

The water is definitely warmer than Calif---but not as warm as the Caribbean. Not as clear either. But, clear enough to see fish and etc while snorkeling.
