Stayed at Hale Koa hotel for 7 days for $148 a night (for military and retired only; rates based on rank). What a great hotel. Can't beat location, value, amenities (wonderful gym and pools), friendly, accommodating staff. Only negatives- jacuzzi out of order entire visit and beds are a little hard. Excellent choice if you qualify. Parking is $6 a day.
Makino Chaya buffet restaurant at Aloha Tower. Lots of mediocre food. Lobster overcooked- very tough. Wagyu beef fatty and gristly. Do not recommend. Worse meal of trip.
Helena's Hawaiian food. Hole in a wall restaurant in Kalihi. Short ribs very tough, otherwise excellent Hawaiian food. Loved their squid luau. Very, very friendly staff.
Liliha Bakery- terrific bakery. Highly recommend cream puffs and Napoleon.
Shorebird Restaurnt, Outrigger Hotel. Get their 50% off coupons in Fri paper or in pamphlets all around Waikiki for breakfast, lunch, or dinner buffets right on the beach.
Swap meet at Aloha stadium. Go early. Very hot. Lots of touristy stuff. Most of clothes are seconds so watch out for quality. Same stuff at International Marketplace but a little more expensive in Waikiki.
Hee Hing Restaurant Kapahulu- used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant but has gone way downhill on this visit. Cannot recommend.
Waiola shave ice in Kapahulu, Matsumoto's in Haleiwa: both serve great shave ice. Highly recommend local treat.
Happy Days Chinese restaurant in Kaimuki. Very popular and cheap.
Room without a Key at Halekulani Hotel. Casual outdoor seating under stars for drinks or dinner with Hawaiian music and dancers at sunset on the beach. It doesn't get better than that. Loved it. Highly recommend. Very romantic.
Leonards malasadas Kapahulu. An institution. Gotta get those malasadas right out of the fryer. Tried them all- plain, or stuffed with guava, haupia, chocolate, or pineapple custard. Yummm!
Sansei Restaurant- not your standard sushi restaurant. Wasn't what I was expecting. Went there on Mon. evening before 6 for half off. Would never pay full price.
Chin's Chinese Restaurant Waialae. Excellent northern Chinese food. A little pricey.
Romey's shrimp truck. Excellent shrimp scampi. Highly recommend. Messy, but oh so delicious.
Ala Moana Shopping Center- pricey, high end stores. Large food court with every kind of food represented.
On Maui took Pacific Whale Foundation's trip. Wonderful experience. Still lots of whales but nearing end of winter season.
Buzz's Wharf- excellent dinner. Highly reccommend their panko crusted ahi tuna. Desserts a real treat too.
Paia Fish Market- average fish tacos.
Went to open market. 3 large papayas for $5.
Tasaka's for guri guri (pronounced goodie goodie) ice cream. The best. Tasted like a creamy gelato. Pineapple and strawberry flavors. 2 scoops for $1.
All in all, wonderful trip. Temperatures on Oahu were in the mid-80's each day with low humidity so great time for a visit.
