Barbers Point Rec Center Cottages

We are coming to Hawaii in April and the only reservations we could make on a base was at Barbers Point Cottages...Has anyone ever stayed there? Will we be happy staying there? We are not familiar with any facilities on the islands so are really coming blind. We would like some comments on the cottages and also some "do not miss" things.

thanks,

Annette

We stayed at the cottages in April of 2007. The cottages are located on Nimitz Beach about 27 miles north and west from Waikiki. They were in the process of renovating the cottages at that time, starting on the easterly side and working their way west one at a time. As it worked out we stayed in a new one for a couple of days and an old one for a week. I liked them both.

The older cottage had two BR, 1 1/2 bath, kitchen/dining/living room area with a lanai on the beach side. The newer one had one BR, one bath with a bigger kitchen/dining/living area along with a lanai.

It’s a very private, secluded area with nice views, you can see the Waikiki area way off. We walked across Coral Sea Street to the club on the Coast Guard Base at night for drinks and to watch Goose, Maverick and Iceman play volleyball. There is a Base golf course within 10 min. that we played and ate breakfast in the clubhouse.

We found the beach not very usable as it is quite rocky going out into the waves. We saw a few sea turtles. For beach time we drove 7 miles NW to the coves at Ko’ Olina which is a great place for beach time, absolutely beautiful. They have four man made lagoons that are blocked off from the ocean making a good place to swim/snorkel for all ages.

There isn’t a lot to do as far as activities go, children may get bored.

I’d stay there again.

Thank you for your information...Was glad to hear from someone that has stayed in cottages...We will not have any children with us and enjoy playing golf so this is probably perfect for us...thanks again.

We were in Honolulu last month and stayed at the Hale Koa (you might check back with them frequently, as reservations change from day to day). We went to Ford

Island and visited the Navy Lodge. The facilities were very nice. There may be a small golf course. We really enjoyed the island. You have access to the Missouri, the Utah (this ship can still be viewed via platform. It went down during the Pearl Harbor attack), a museum, the original flight tower, and the new memorial - I believe it is dedicated to the Oklahoma. From the Navy Lodge, there is a bus that will take you over to the B/X and other shopping on the Pearl Harbor base. I believe the rooms start at

$80.00/night. Check out www.navy-lodge.com

Good luck.
