Hi,

When friends and family visit, we take them to the beach boys at the Outrigger on the beach just outside Duke's Barefoot Bar. It's 30 US for about 1-1 1/2 hr lesson. After a lesson, board rental the same day is $5 an hour. Otherwise, boards there (and at most Waikiki stands) rent for $10 hr. Waikiki can get crowded, but it is great surf for beginners. The sets come in slowly and aren't as steep as in a lot of other places on the island.

There are surf schools on the North Shore as well. Surf n Sea starts at around $60 and hour and Hans Hederman at Turtle Bay is even more than that. Sunset Suzy caters to women. Her website is www.sunsetsuzy.com for info and pricing.
